Professional Background
David Sabgir, MD, a Columbus, Ohio, native and full-time cardiologist at OhioHealth, founded Walk with a Doc in 2005 after becoming frustrated by his inability to effect behavior change in a clinical setting. While the program has now spread to 700+ communities in over 30 countries, Dr. Sabgir continues to personally invite his patients to walk alongside him as a local Walk with a Doc leader.
Dr. Sabgir has been honored to be a CNN Hero and to see Walk with a Doc featured in print and broadcast media all over the world. The program has evolved to focus on not only physical activity but also education, nature, and social connectedness. Dr. Sabgir is married to Kristin with two children and two poodles.
Philosophy and Programs
Walk with a Doc brings people together for a common purpose — taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Walking truly is the best medicine, especially when it can be done in nature, and Walk with a Doc aspires to make this safe, accessible, and fun for people around the world.
Each Walk with a Doc event is led by a volunteer healthcare provider who spends a few minutes talking about a relevant health topic. The walks are also an incredible opportunity for community members to connect, learn from each other, and celebrate both similarities and differences, building social connections that are critical for a long and healthy life. Walk with a Doc commits to creating a space of belonging where community members from all backgrounds feel safe and respected.
