Research and experience tell us that exercise triggers feel-good brain chemicals that make us feel less stressed and anxious, sleep better, focus more intently, and even feel less depressed. But here’s where the Catch-22 comes in: The people who may benefit the most from the mood-boosting benefits of exercise may be the least likely to engage in it because anxiety, stress, and depression decrease feelings of motivation and self-efficacy — key prerequisites to meaningful movement.
In this workshop, acclaimed researcher Kristin Szuhany, PhD, explains how to disrupt this cycle. Through her research, Dr. Szuhany has come to understand the most common barriers to exercise engagement — and the cognitive shifts needed to overcome them. Here, she will explain the core benefits that exercise and movement can have for mental health and the cognitive-behavioral motivation enhancement techniques shown to help individuals who need them most, particularly those with anxiety or depressive symptoms.
