Michael Grandner, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist, director of the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona, and director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Clinic at the Banner-University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. 

 

Philosophy and Approach

His work focuses on translational sleep research and behavioral sleep medicine, including studies of sleep as a domain of health behavior and the development and implementation of behavioral interventions for insufficient sleep and sleep disorders. Specific areas of focus include:

  • Cardiovascular, metabolic, and behavioral health outcomes linked to habitual sleep duration and/or insufficient sleep
  • Social, behavioral, and biological determinants of habitual sleep duration, insufficient sleep, and poor sleep quality
  • Development and implementation of behavioral interventions for sleep as a domain of health behavior.

 

Awards and Programs

Dr. Grandner is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the UA College of Medicine, with joint appointments in the departments of Medicine, Psychology, Nutritional Sciences, and Clinical Translational Science. In addition, he is a faculty member of the Neuroscience and Physiological Sciences graduate interdisciplinary programs. He is certified in behavioral sleep medicine by the American Board of Sleep Medicine and is a diplomate in behavioral sleep medicine of the Board of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.

He has received awards and honors for his work from the Society of Behavioral Sleep MedicineSleep Research SocietyAmerican Academy of Sleep MedicineAmerican Heart AssociationPopulation Association of AmericaSleep Research Network, and other groups. He has also received two separate Outstanding Professor Awards (from the Department of Psychology and a student group) for his teaching of statistics. He is an elected fellow of the American Heart Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Grandner maintains memberships with a number of professional organizations, including the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Sleep Research Society, the American Heart Association, and the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine (where he is past president). He helped found the Pennsylvania Sleep Society, served on its first Board of Directors, and is a past president. Every March you can find him at the EPI/Lifestyle Council Meeting of the American Heart Association, and every June you can find him at the meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies. He has given hundreds of lectures and presentations on topics related to sleep and health, and he is frequently sought as an expert on issues related to sleep.
